THEMIS Launches!
Taking multitasking to new heights, NASA launched the five THEMIS satellites aboard a single Delta II rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida at 6:01 p.m. EST. Racing into space on the flaming power of three rocket stages and nine solid rocket motors, the THEMIS satellites will soon disperse around Earth to monitor auroras like the Northern Lights.
NASA is undertaking the mission to investigate what causes auroras in the Earth's atmosphere to change in appearance and dissipate. Discovering why the light of auroras can fluctuate and fade will provide scientists with important details on how the planet's protective magnetosphere works and on the sun-Earth connection.
The Mission

NASA officials have decided to remove propellants that were loaded this week on Space Shuttle Atlantis before returning the spacecraft to the Vehicle Assembly Building. This work results in additional time at the pad, and rollback is now expected to occur Sunday or Monday.
Monday's severe thunderstorm with hail caused what could be 1,000 to 2,000 divots in the giant tank's foam insulation and minor surface damage to about 26 heat shield tiles on the shuttle's left wing.
Further evaluation of the tank is necessary to get an accurate accounting of foam damage and must be done in the Vehicle Assembly Building, where the entire tank can be more easily accessed.
Once an up-close look at the damage is complete, the type of repair required and the time needed for that work can be determined.
A new target launch date has not been determined, but teams will focus on preparing Atlantis for liftoff in late April.
The two-day Flight Readiness Review at NASA's Kennedy Space Center conducted by top-level NASA officials, space shuttle program managers, engineers and contractors will continue as planned.

Quali danni concreti porta la grandine ad un bestione siffatto? . -

penso che la grandine, creando buchi o comunque rovinando il rivestimento esterno possa indebolire a livelli molto peirocolosi la protezione che quel rivestimento ha nei confronti delle altissime temperature che si raggiungono ai limiti dell'atmosfera e quindi il tank rischierebbe di esplodere. . -

Mission and Crew
Mission STS-117 is the Space Shuttle Program's 21st mission to the International Space Station. Rick Sturckow will command the mission and Lee Archambault will serve as Atlantis' pilot. Mission Specialists Patrick Forrester, James Reilly, Steven Swanson, John Olivas and Flight Engineer Clayton Anderson round out the crew to deliver the S3/S4 starboard truss segments, batteries and another pair of solar arrays to the space station. Anderson will replace Expedition 15 Flight Engineer Sunita Williams on station and Williams will return to Earth aboard Atlantis.

Ho visto il lancio di questa notte sul sito della Nasa! spettacolare direi..molto molto impressionante..come tutti del resto.. Una curiosità se posso, qualcuno di voi sa percaso da dove deriva il nome della navicella Atlantis? una mia curiosità.. . -

Ho da farvi una domanda..sapete se poi sono stati risolti i problemi informatici che i primi giorni avevano creato qualche problema con l'erogatore di ossigeno? Non se ne è più parlato..Immagino che non era nulla di serio. Dico bene? .
